According to the Atharva Veda, Lord Kartikeya is the fire deity Agni’s or Agnibhuh’s son. Kartikeya is described by the Satapatha Brahmana as the 9th manifestation of Agni and the son of Rudra. The Gayatri mantra for Shanmukha is contained in the Taittiriya Aranyaka.

His manifestation of Skanda is described as the path that leads to wisdom in the Chandogya Upanishad. Lord Kartikeya is referred to as Subrahmanya and Mahasena in the Baudhayana Dharmasutra.
